The long-awaited rains have finally arrived in Bulawayo, bringing relief and hope to the city’s long-suffering residents.

In Ward 5, residents are breathing a sigh of relief as the rains replenish the city’s water dams and alleviate the crippling water shortages that have plagued the area. For months, residents have struggled to access water, with some resorting to collecting rainwater from their rooftops for drinking—despite the health risks involved.

The desperation for water has been evident, with many expressing gratitude for the rainfall. “We’ve been struggling to get water for so long. It’s a blessing to finally have some relief,” said one resident.

Private boreholes, which have been a lifeline for many households, had stopped pumping water due to the prolonged drought. However, with the arrival of the rains, residents are hopeful the boreholes will become operational again. This would provide much-needed relief, as many have been relying on alternative sources, including expensive and unreliable private water suppliers.

The heavy rainfall, however, has brought its own set of challenges, particularly in areas with poor roads and large potholes. “The roads in our area are already bad, and the heavy rain is making them even worse,” said another resident. “The potholes are filling with water, making it difficult to drive or even walk. It’s a nightmare,” he added.

The city’s drainage system, neglected for years, has also been overwhelmed by the downpour, resulting in widespread flooding in some areas. Residents fear the water will damage their homes and belongings and are calling on the city council to take immediate action to improve the drainage system and repair the road network.

As the rains continue to pour, residents of Ward 5 remain cautiously optimistic, hoping this marks the beginning of a new era of abundance and prosperity for Bulawayo.
