The legacy of Dr Joshua Nkomo will once again take to the streets of Bulawayo, not through political speeches or history books, but through the footsteps of runners brought together by a shared message of peace and unity.
The Joshua Nkomo Peace Marathon was officially launched on 29 October 2026, with organisers confirming that its second edition will take place on 25 April 2027.
Organised by the Joshua Nkomo Legacy Restoration Project Trust in partnership with the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), the event seeks to honour the life and values of one of Zimbabwe’s most respected liberation figures.
The marathon also provides an opportunity to bring people from different backgrounds together, using sport as a platform to encourage national unity, peaceful coexistence and a shared sense of purpose.
While the first edition laid the foundation, the 2027 event is expected to build on that momentum by attracting more runners, corporate partners and members of the public.
To the city of Bulawayo, the marathon offers an opportunity to celebrate its connection to Dr Nkomo’s legacy while welcoming participants who share an interest in sport and community development.
“Dr Joshua Nkomo’s legacy should not remain confined to the pages of history. It should continue to inspire how we live, how we treat one another and how we build our country. Through this marathon, we want people to carry his message of peace and unity beyond the finish line.,” informed the organisers.
Organisers are calling on the corporate sector, sporting communities, potential sponsors and Zimbabweans at large to support the initiative as preparations gather pace.
On 25 April 2027, runners will return to Bulawayo with a reminder that a marathon can be about more than speed, medals and personal records. It can also be a meeting point for people united by a common purpose.
