The City of Bulawayo on Saturday marked 100 years of the Bulawayo City Pool, formerly known as Borrow Swimming Pool.

The centenary celebration brought together city officials, swimming clubs, athletes and members of the public to mark the history of the facility and its place in Bulawayo’s sporting life.

The pool was established in 1926, the same year Highlanders Football Club and Crusaders Swimming Club were formed.

The three institutions have since become part of Bulawayo’s sporting history, with the city pool serving generations of swimmers over the years.

Mayor Senator David Coltart’s remarks were delivered by Councillor Ntombizodwa Khumalo, while Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Judith Ncube was represented by Permanent Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Paul Nyoni.

Town Clerk Christopher Dube was represented by Director of Housing and Community Services Dictor Khumalo.

Bulawayo Amateur Swimming Association vice chairperson Vusumuzi Ncube also spoke during the celebrations.

The speakers spoke about the role swimming has played in the city and the need to continue supporting sporting facilities used by residents.

The City also presented certificates of appreciation to swimming clubs and other organisations that have supported the pool and contributed to swimming in Bulawayo over the years.

A swimming gala was also held as part of the centenary programme, bringing swimmers together to mark the occasion.

The City encouraged residents to use its swimming facilities and said the pools are manned by trained professionals to assist with swimmer safety.

The 100th anniversary gave the city an opportunity to reflect on the history of one of its long-standing sporting facilities while keeping swimming part of Bulawayo’s sporting calendar.
