Gwanda’s football ambitions are growing, and with Blanket Mine FC securing promotion to the Premier Soccer League, attention is turning to the ground that could become the home of top-flight football in the mining town.

The club’s promotion has brought excitement among its supporters, but it has also opened a new conversation about the facilities needed to accommodate Premier Soccer League football. At the centre of that discussion is Sabiwa Stadium, Blanket Mine FC’s home ground, which has been undergoing improvements.

In a town that has waited for an opportunity to be represented in the country’s top football league, the prospect of hosting Premier Soccer League matches locally carries special significance.

Supporters could soon have the chance to watch some of Zimbabwe’s biggest clubs without travelling to other cities.
The stadium improvements are part of efforts to bring the facility closer to the required football standards. Among the developments already completed is the construction of four changing rooms for players and two for match officials.

Sabiwa Stadium has also played a role in grassroots football, hosting Blanket Mine’s Division One and Division Two teams, while providing a sporting space for Sabiwa High and Primary schools.
