Zimbabwe’s tourism capital is set to come alive this weekend as thousands of local and international runners converge for the 2026 Victoria Falls Marathon, one of Africa’s premier road-running events.

The marathon will take place on Sunday, 5 July 2026, bringing together elite athletes, amateur runners, fitness enthusiasts and tourists from across the globe.
The event has grown into an internationally recognised sporting spectacle that promotes healthy living while showcasing Zimbabwe as a leading destination for sports tourism.

Organised in partnership with athletics authorities and tourism stakeholders, the marathon features four race categories, these being: the 42.2-kilometre full marathon, 21.1-kilometre half marathon, a half-marathon relay, and a 7.5-kilometre fun run, allowing participants of varying fitness levels to take part.

The race begins in the resort city of Victoria Falls and follows a scenic route across the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge into neighbouring Zambia before returning to Zimbabwe.
Runners will enjoy breathtaking views of the mighty Zambezi River and the world-renowned Victoria Falls, while sections of the course pass through the Zambezi National Park, offering participants a truly unique racing experience.

Beyond the competition, the marathon is expected to provide a major boost to the local economy. Hotels, lodges, restaurants, transport operators, tour companies and small businesses are anticipating increased business as thousands of visitors spend the weekend in the city.

Many participants also extend their stay to explore the area’s renowned attractions, including game drives, sunset cruises, helicopter flights over the falls and white-water rafting on the Zambezi River.

Tourism and sporting officials have described the marathon as one of Zimbabwe’s flagship international events, noting that it continues to strengthen the country’s reputation as a destination capable of hosting world-class sporting competitions while promoting its rich natural heritage.

With athletes arriving from numerous countries, the event also fosters cultural exchange, international friendships and community participation.
Local residents are expected to line the streets to cheer on competitors, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the city.

As the countdown to race day continues, organisers have finalised preparations to ensure a safe, well-coordinated and memorable event for competitors and spectators alike. Security personnel, medical teams, volunteers and race officials will be deployed along the course to provide support throughout the competition.

The 2026 Victoria Falls Marathon once again places Zimbabwe on the international sporting calendar, combining elite athletics with one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders.

For many participants, crossing the finish line will not only mark the completion of a race but also an unforgettable experience in one of Africa’s most iconic destinations.
