In the heart of Bulawayo, a group of talented musicians is making waves with their unique blend of traditional Imbube music, love songs, and spiritual anthems. Meet Amaqaqa, the multi-award-winning group that’s taking the world by storm.
Founded in 2018 by Khulekani Sibanda “Khabo”, Amaqaqa’s mission is to share their African identity, promote unity, and spread the love of God through music.
Their name, which means ‘a group of people climbing a big mountain’, is a testament to their determination to reach new heights.
In an exclusive interview with My Kasi Magazine, the group’s lead singer and songwriter Khulekani Mnkandla informed,that the group’s foundation derives from their culture and heritage.
“We are Africans, proud of our roots, and sons of God,” says Khulekani Mnkandla
“Our music reflects our heritage and conveys our message of love, unity, and spirituality.”
He further traced the roots of the group from humble beginnings, Amaqaqa has grown to include nine talented members, each bringing their own story and passion to the table.
“Growing up in rural areas, I was inspired by Imbube groups like Ibutho elingcwele,” Khulekani shares.
“My uncles were part of it, and I fell in love with the music. It’s the same for my bandmates we’re all connected by our love for culture and music.”
Mnkandla told My Kasi Magazine that,Amaqaqa’s sound is a fusion of traditional and modern elements, making them a hit with audiences across genres.
“We diversify our music to reach everyone,” Khulekani explains.
“Whether it’s traditional, gospel, or love songs, our message is always one of love and unity,” he added.
Their collaborations with renowned artists like Baba Harare and Mann Friday have been nothing short of phenomenal.
“Music is like prayer,” Khulekani says.
“It transcends languages and connects us all.”
On May 31st, Amaqaqa will launch their 5th album, “Inkemba ‘The Sword”, a spiritual masterpiece that explores the second coming of Christ.
“It’s a wake-up call, a call to arms,” Khulekani warns.
“We can’t wait to share it with our fans in Bulawayo and beyond!”
