At least 77 pedestrians died and 143 were injured in Bulawayo. This was confirmed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police during a campaign which the ZRP police was leading last week in Bulawayo a log Herbert Chitepo and Leopold Takawira Chicken inn.

Inspector Nomalanga Msebele who is the provincial spokeperson, of the Bulawayo Zimbabwe informed the public to take responsibility for their own safety.

As she indicated that majority of incidents have been contributed by putting on earphones and using cell phones while on the road.

“Last year alone;out of 212 accidents in Bulawayo involving pedestrians crossing the road while putting on earphones and using cell phones, 77 died and 143 injured, 11 said inspector Msebele.

The remarks which were made by Inspector Msebele,have raised a debate on social media.
With some members of the public in Bulawayo calling for the introduction of a law that will support the support of those who are seen with earphones crossing the streets to be arrested.

In Zambia, in 2003 a new law was put in place that prohibits pedestrians from crossing the road with headsets or talking on the phone.
In Botswana police introduced that anyone who is seen walking along the road with headphones on will be charged or arrested.
