At the 3393rd Bulawayo City Council meeting, Mayor His Worship Senator Councillor David Coltart made an exciting announcement: for the first time ever, the City of Kings and Queens will host the 2027 Street Child Cricket World Cup.
The Street Child Cricket World Cup is a global tournament held as a curtain-raiser to the main 50-over Cricket World Cup. Its mission is to raise awareness for street-connected children worldwide and show that they, too, have value and a role to play in society.
“We’ve been in talks with the organisers of the World Street Children Cricket Tournament,” said Mayor Coltart.
“I’m pleased to inform you that our request to host has been accepted.”
The 2027 tournament will run for 10 days and will feature 20 mixed-gender teams from around the world. It will coincide with the ICC Cricket World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Zimbabwe, Namibia, and South Africa.
The event is expected to boost Bulawayo’s tourism, youth development, and sports sectors.
Zimbabwe first participated in the tournament in 2023 and finished as first runner-up. Countries like India have previously hosted the tournament.
Cricket remains one of the most followed sports in Bulawayo. Mayor Coltart, a known cricket enthusiast and former Minister of Sports, said he looks forward to seeing the city play a central role in such a meaningful global event.
