In a landmark moment for Zimbabwe’s education system and digital transformation agenda, the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, under Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere, last week unveiled Luzibo Radio in Bulawayo, a new education-focused channel designed to reshape learning nationwide.
The launch, described as a historic milestone under Zim-Digital Phase 2, reflects the Government’s commitment to expanding digital inclusion and strengthening educational delivery. Speaking at the ceremony, President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially commissioned the station, noting its potential to reach and educate thousands of learners across the country.
“I am enthused to announce historic milestones under Zim-Digital Phase 2: the commissioning of Luzibo Radio, a new education channel operated in partnership with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. This channel will bring educational content directly to learners across the country, supporting our objectives in the sector,” said the President.
Luzibo Radio will operate from the newly modernised Montrose Studios in Bulawayo, a regional hub for advanced broadcasting. The station will transmit educational content in ten national languages, ensuring inclusivity for learners across Zimbabwe’s linguistic and cultural communities. Broadcasts will be accessible via traditional FM frequencies and Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), extending reach to remote areas with limited FM coverage.
The initiative aligns with the national “Drive Zimbabwe Forward” vision, blending heritage-based curricula with modern digital platforms. The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) has now expanded its radio portfolio to seven stations, reinforcing radio’s role in education, national cohesion, and public engagement.
The launch event brought together government officials, educators, media practitioners, and members of the public, marking the beginning of a channel expected to support both classrooms and households.
Luzibo Radio boasts a dynamic on-air team combining experience and youthful energy, including former Skyz Metro FM presenters Teseletso Matjaka (Mma-Nare) and Charity Chikara, alongside Nkosile Khumalo (uZinzie wakoKhumalo), Pronellah Lunga (MissP-uMaMgcu), Emmerson Ndlovu (The Smart Pantsula), and Kalanga Prince Nehemiah Sibanda.
Beyond broadcasting, the station aims to foster interactive learning through phone-ins, social media engagement, and community outreach. By using local languages and culturally relevant examples, Luzibo Radio seeks to make subjects such as mathematics, science, history, and environmental studies more accessible and engaging for young learners.
Aligned with Zimbabwe’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plan (NAP), the station will also promote environmental education and green initiatives.
As Luzibo Radio takes to the airwaves, it signals renewed optimism for inclusive, technology-driven education, a powerful example of how innovation and learning can work together to shape Zimbabwe’s future.
