Bulawayo is buzzing with pride as it marks 131 years since it was declared a town on June 1, 1894 by Leander Starr Jameson outside the old Maxim Hotel on Fife Street.

To celebrate this milestone, the city is currently hosting the Bulawayo Arts Festival, a vibrant annual event that kicked off on May 31 with pre-festival activities.

The opening night featured Comedy Meets Poetry at Stanley Hall, headlined by legendary comedian Ntando Van Moyo, with performances by Diana Nomusa, Nkosi King, and Sonkomose keeping the crowd entertained.

The following day saw the Kasi to Kasi Talent Search Final at the Amphitheatre, showcasing six finalists from different communities. Ricky Ice from Mzilikazi emerged as the winner, claiming the spotlight.

Main celebrations began on June 1 with a powerful Gospel Concert at Large City Hall. The lineup included top gospel acts like Vocal Ex, Family Voices, and Abigail Mwembe, leading the audience in spirited worship.

On June 2, Bulawayo Day was commemorated with a colourful citywide parade to Inxwala Grounds. The procession featured Deputy Minister of Local Government Tawanda Mavurisa, city councillors, church leaders, and Highlanders FC supporters, among others.

The festival continues with a range of events across the city and will conclude on June 6, celebrating the heart and soul of Bulawayo through arts, music, and unity.
