Love has a language of its own. Sometimes it is found in the excitement of meeting someone special, in the courage it takes to open your heart, or in the silence that follows when a relationship begins to fall apart.
For Zimbabwean,Bulawayo based musician MJ Sings, these experiences provide the inspiration for ISOKA The Art of Loving, a three-track extended play that places Ndebele romance at the centre of a contemporary African sound.
The project explores the different emotions that come with loving someone, from the happiness of finding a connection to the uncertainty and heartbreak that can test a relationship. It draws on familiar experiences while giving them a musical identity rooted in Ndebele culture.
As a musician working with this sound, the appeal lies in bringing cultural expression into stories about everyday life. Love is a familiar subject in music, but the language, traditions and emotional expressions through which people experience it give every story its own character.
With Isoka, MJ Sings combines Ndebele romantic influences with soul and contemporary African sounds, creating a project that speaks to the personal side of relationships.
The intention, as outlined in the release announcement, is to present a romantic story that feels intimate, familiar and distinctly African.
The three track project features Finally and Away, which features Bhekiwe, alongside a third track completing the collection.
Together, the songs explore different moments in the experience of love rather than presenting romance as a journey filled with happiness alone.
That approach gives the project room to acknowledge the difficult parts of relationships. Finding someone can bring excitement, but allowing that person to get close also means accepting vulnerability. Distance, uncertainty and disappointment can become part of the experience, even when the feelings are genuine.
The project was scheduled for release on 23 October 2026, with recording done at DAB Three Studios. Maask and Reneiloe handled production, while Maask was responsible for mixing and mastering.
