Breast cancer awareness often receives the most attention in October, when pink ribbons and community campaigns remind people of the importance of early detection. However for residents who struggle to access health information, screening services and treatment, the challenge goes beyond wearing pink for a month.

Nkulumane Member of Parliament Hon Freedom P. Murechu brought the message closer to the community last week when he presided over the Breast Cancer Awareness Commemoration Day at Nkulumane Clinic, encouraging residents to take their health seriously and support those affected by the disease.

Murechu urged the community to promote regular screening, share accurate information and stand with survivors and their families. His message highlighted the importance of making conversations about breast cancer part of everyday life, rather than waiting for October to raise awareness.

While to some residents, however, acting on that message may not always be straightforward.

As limited access to reliable health information, fear of receiving a cancer diagnosis and misconceptions surrounding the disease can discourage people from seeking medical attention. Financial difficulties may also make it harder for some families to manage transport costs, medical consultations and the expenses associated with further tests or treatment.
These challenges can leave people uncertain about where to seek help or cause them to delay getting symptoms checked.

Breast cancer awareness is therefore not only about teaching people to recognise possible warning signs. It is also about encouraging them to seek professional medical advice without shame or fear, while ensuring they know where to find appropriate healthcare services.

Hon Murechu’s call for community support also speaks to the experience of families who stand alongside someone diagnosed with cancer. Beyond the medical challenges, patients may need emotional support, practical assistance and reassurance as they navigate treatment and recovery.
