Why Radio Bukalanga matters to Plumtree?

A radio station can be more than a place where music is played and news is read. In communities such as Plumtree, it can become a daily link between people, their language and the issues happening around them.

That is the space Radio Bukalanga occupies, serving listeners in Plumtree and surrounding areas with programming that reflects the Kalanga community.

The appointment of Nkosikhona Dibiti to the station’s board comes at a time when community radio continues to provide an important platform for local voices.

Mr Dibiti said he was honoured to take up the responsibility because of the connection he has with the Kalanga identity.

“It is an opportunity to contribute to something deeply connected to who we are our identity, language, culture, heritage and the stories of the Kalanga people,” he said.

Radio Bukalanga’s community role goes beyond broadcasting. Its programmes can create space for conversations about issues affecting residents, while also helping keep language and cultural traditions part of everyday life.

The radio can also provide a sense of connection to home and to stories that may not always receive attention from national broadcasters.
Dibiti said he wanted to use his experience and ideas to help build on the work already done by those who established and developed the station.

“As I begin this new responsibility, my hope is to contribute meaningfully, bring my experience and ideas to the table, and help strengthen Radio Bukalanga’s role in serving, connecting and empowering the Kalanga community,” he said.

His appointment brings the focus back to one of community radio’s central roles giving communities a voice.
