‘Ibiyi mpelaviki abantu bekade bematasatasa’ , it was indeed a bustling weekend as Matabeleland’s entertainment landscape transformed into a vibrant hub of music, comedy, motorsport, and masterclasses.

The region played host to a diverse slate of high-profile events, underscoring its growing reputation as a cultural powerhouse. Key highlights included the Kwela Fest Activation, an exclusive Masterclass with acclaimed actress Dawn Thandeka King, and the satirical spectacle Roast of The Mayor.

On the outskirts of Bulawayo, the Airport Family Fun Day at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport redefined the use of public spaces for entertainment.

Organised by the Airports Company of Zimbabwe on April 11th, the event drew families and motorsport enthusiasts alike for thrilling car spinning and burnout exhibitions that electrified the crowd.

In the heart of the city, the historic Bulawayo Theatre was brought to life by Umahlekisa The Comedy Club. The much-anticipated show attracted over a hundred patrons and delivered on its promise the auditorium echoed with laughter from start to finish. The evening’s centerpiece, the Roast of The Mayor, featured a formidable panel of comedians and public figures: Um’fricakazi, Philani Nyoni, Tanya Alex, MP Discent Collins Bajila, Doug Bramseni, and Doc Vikela.

For audiences unable to attend in person, Zimpapers provided a live broadcast across its digital platforms, extending the experience beyond the theatre walls.

Meanwhile, in Harare, Legends Night offered a nostalgic journey through Zimbabwean music history. The retro-themed showcase celebrated iconic performers, with Bulawayo’s internationally acclaimed Cool Crooners leading the lineup. Their rendition of the classic “Ibhulugwe Lami” was a standout moment.

They were joined by regional stalwarts Jeys Marabini and Iyasa, who performed alongside the Intotal Band in a tribute to enduring musical legacy.

From the City of Kings and Queens to the capital, the weekend affirmed the vitality and range of Zimbabwe’s creative industry where tradition, innovation, and audience appetite continue to converge.
